Speaking Kiwi

I never thought my native English language could be so complex. To live and work in New Zealand, I had to learn a whole new vocabulary. Some of these "kiwi" terms are from British origin, some are from Australia and some are uniquely New Zealand.

Ka Mate!

Ka Mate is the best thing about New Zealand! In short, it is a tribal war chant. Ka Mate has hundreds of years of history behind it. It is one of many chants and songs from the proud, indigenous Maori people of New Zealand. Rugby fans may have already heard it as the chant the New Zealand national rugby team (the All Blacks) do before every match to pschye out their opponents. New Zealand is known as one of the most picturesque countries on the planet. They're not kidding! Peter Jackson didn't use this stunning scenery as a backdrop for Lord of the Rings just because it was it's native country, he used it because it was the best possible place! Snow-capped peaks, wild plains, rocky cliff shores, majestic fjords, white-sand beaches, calm lakes - New Zealand has it all. My modest gallery does not even begin to capture this amazing country.
